Hu`e Mana`o
“Hu`e Mana`o” might be translated as “let thoughts fly.” Noted Maui-born musician/composer Cody “Pueo” Pata named this segment in which Ho`olohe Hou Radio creator/host Bill Wynne discusses the finer points of Hawaiian music and its origins in and relationship with music from around the world. As a performer, despite specializing in Hawaiian music for over 40 years and demonstrating proficiency in steel guitar, slack key guitar, `ukulele, and falsetto singing, Wynne has also studied and performed classical, opera, jazz, rock, country, and Bluegrass music. He has also amassed a collection of recordings in these genres that overshadows his Hawaiian music library. While there are 25,000 Hawaiian music recordings in Wynne’s collection, they share a space with a whopping 250,000 songs in these various other genres. Because Wynne is widely studied on all kinds of music, he brings a unique perspective to the analysis of Hawaiian music and its similarities to – and differences from – these other styles from around the world.
Stay tuned to Ho`olohe Hou Radio to hear Wynne’s musings on the state of Hawaiian music past, present, and future when “Hu`e Mana`o” airs throughout each month.
